Essaouira Day Tour from Marrakesh
Essaouira Day Tour from Marrakesh is an attractive small town on the Atlantic coast of Morocco known for it's relaxed atmosphere and artisan community. Fortified walls divide Essaouira into several districts, however it's French influence is visible in the grid-like layout of the city. Walk along the seaside ramparts admiring the canons, or wander through the fishing port and enjoy the daily catch of sardines or other local seafood for lunch. Visit the Medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Listed city, renowned for its cabinet-making and wood-carving. Artisans here use the roots of the Arar tree, local to this area. For a more active day you can take a Quad or Camel tour, and if you enjoy being on the water then Essaouira, with its strong winds, is perfect for kitesurfing and windsurfing.
If you're looking for a break from Marrakech for a day, but still want to enjoy a city, then Essaouira is the place to go. Located about three hours from Marrakech, this coastal town offers plenty to see and do, and offers it at a much more relaxed pace.
The Berber and Arabic names for Essaouira mean "the wall", which is fitting, as it's fortifications certainly are a defining feature of this coastal city. Near where you are dropped off is the ‘Skala du Port’ where, for a small fee, you can walk along part of the wall and ramparts, and enjoy a panoramic view of the city and ocean.
Visit the port, an exciting bustle of activity, full of the distinctive Essaouira blue fishing boats, and fishermen, busy with their work. While the main catch is sardines, you can also find shrimp, squid, conger eel, and a variety of other fish. If you can then definitely get the fresh catch for lunch here and have one of the restaurants prepare it over a charcoal grill.
If you've spent any time in the souks of Marrakech's Medina then you may be happily surprised by Essaouira's. Here the streets are wider, the sun seems brighter, and everyone is so much more relaxed. A highlight here is the woodcraft. Craftsmen make their cabinets, boxes and other carvings from the wood and the root of the Arar, a tree native to the Atlas Mountains.
If you're wanting to slow down even more, Essaouira has a wonder- ful sandy beach and boardwalk where you can take a stroll, or just sit and relax while watching the waves and enjoy some sweets sold to you by some fellow who is passing by with a tray of cookies.
